Is it time for a parenting license?
I wonder how long we have to wait before we get a serious debate in this country about parenting and whether or not every person who wants to, should be allowed to have children.
One of the most important vocations in life is parenting. For one reason above all others - that it affects other people.
Having children means bringing people into the world who, if they had a choice, may have preferred not to have anything to do with the kind of parents who brought them here. To that extent, parenting can be also one of the most selfish and self-indulgent of vocations. And unlike any other vocation, there are no qualifications required.
Once upon a time, social values required you at least to be married, to have made a commitment to another person – a commitment would strengthen the capacity to properly look after any children who came into the world.
